Rio 2016: Dipa Karmakar misses medal by a whisker

India continues to be without a medal in the Rio Olympics, even after the ninth day of the events and with just one week remaining. Dipa Karmakar, who had created history by becoming the first Indian to qualify for a Gymnastics Final at the Games, missed by a whisker from winning a medal in Women's Vault. Dipa, who did a Produnova, a tough front handspring and two front somersaults, finished fourth with a score of 15.066. America's 10-time world champion Simone Biles was first, which was her third Gold of the Games. Russian Maria Paseka claimed the Silver, while Swiss Giulia Steingruber took the Bronze.Earlier, the Indian Men's Hockey team made a shock exit from the Games after they were humbled by Belgium 1-3 in the quarterfinals. India had scored the first goal through Akashdeep Singh but they failed to capitalise and lost through a brace from Sebastien Dockier and Tom Boon. The Indian Women's team had bowed out earlier.In Tennis, Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna failed to give India its first medal of the Games as they lost the Mixed Doubles Bronze medal play-off. They lost to the Czech team of Radek Stepanek and Lucie Hradecka in straight sets, 1-6, 5-7. Earlier Sania and Bopanna had blown a chance to win a Silver medal after they lost to Americans Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram in the semi-finals.In Badminton, India's top shuttler and world number five Saina Nehwal crashed out. She was stunned by world No. 61 Maria Ulitina of Ukraine, 18-21, 19-21. PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth, however, progressed to the pre-quarterfinals keeping the medal hopes alive. While Sindhu defeated Canadian Michelle Lee, 19-21, 21-15, 21-17, Srikanth beat Henri Hurskainen of Sweden, 21-6, 21-18 to top their respective groups.Indian shooters ended the Games without a medal showcasing a disappointing performance. On the final day of Shooting, Gagan Narang and Chain Singh failed to qualify to the Finals of 50 metre Rifle 3 positions event and made their way out. In Boxing, Manoj Kumar failed to make the quarterfinals in the 64 kilogram weight class. He lost his Round-of-16 bout against Uzbekistan's Fazliddin Gaibnazarov, 0-3. Vikas Krishan is the only Indian pugilist left. He had, earlier, secured a place in the quarterfinals of 75 kg category and is just one win away from a medal. In Women's Marathon, OP Jaisha ended 89th and Kavita Raut 120th. The United States continues to lead the medals tally, with China second and Great Britain third.
