Ricky Ponting announces retirement from Test cricket

Australia's former Skipper and middle order bulwark for years, Ricky Ponting today announced that he will retire from Test cricket after playing in the third Test against South Africa which begins in Perth tomorrow. At a press conference in Perth today, Ponting said that he was calling it quits as he has not being performing for some time to the level he had desired. Saying that it was a long thought decision, Ponting said, at the end of the day it was about his results and output in this series so far.Ponting, who will turn 38 next month, has scored 13,336 Test runs from 158 matches at an average of 52.21, second only to India's Sachin Tendulkar. Nicknamed 'Punter', Ponting has scored 41 centuries, third in the all-time list behind Tendulkar and South African all rounder, Jacques Kallis.
