The Finance Secretary Ashok Chawla on Monday said that with a more-than-expected revenue coming in from the 3G auction, the Government is now in a better position to handle the fiscal deficit. Mr. Chawla said that he did not visualise any liquidity crunch in the system in the immediate future as 3G auction and advance tax outgo are unlikely to cause any problem. He added that the Government expects more revenue from the forthcoming auction of broadband wireless access, BWA, which would also give it some additional headroom. The BWA spectrum began from today and 11 telecom companies, including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, RCom, the Tatas and Qualcom are in the fray for two slots of spectrum. The reserve price is 1,750 crore rupees for a pan-India BWA spectrum licence. After experiencing success in 3G spectrum auction the government is now hopeful that the BWA auction would also bring higher revenue windfall.
