United Nations has said that the results of August 20 Presidential elections in Afghanistan will be legitimate and credible even as fraud has taken place during the voting.

The main UN representative in Afghanistan Mr. Kai Eide said there have been several steps taken to remove the fraudulent votes during the counting process and asserted that results will be acceptable to Afghans. Addressing a press conference in Kabul this afternoon in presence of several ambassadors from western nations, Mr. Eide said international community is united behind the election process and it is a tribute to Afghans who voted despite poor security conditions and are waiting patiently for the results.

The final certified results are delayed inordinately and are expected next week after last week sample recounting of around 15 percent of polling centers. The UN representative accepted that the election process has been negatively affected because of charges by his sacked deputy Mr. Peter Galbraith who charged Mr. Eide of covering up the fraud.

Incumbent President Mr. Hamid Karzai has got 54.6 percent of votes against his main rival Dr. Abdullah with around 28 percent in the preliminary results announced last month. Dr. Abdullah has alleged massive fraud and threatened not to accept the results if such cases are not addressed.
