Minister Chidambaram says, his resignation over the Dantewada Naxal attack, which was rejected by the Prime Minister, is a closed chapter. He said in Puducherry today that he decided to quit because the CRPF came under his charge. But that does not mean state governments have no role in tackling the Maoists. They acknowledge it and all the state governments are fully aware of this responsibility.

Terming the attack as a blot he said it was an intra-Chhattisgarh operation and not an inter-state operation.

The exercise was planned by the State Inspector General of Police and DIG of CRPF. It was conveyed to the Police Headquarters and they were aware of the exercise. But, he said, something went very badly wrong and precious lives were lost.

He said the government has appointed an inquiry committee to go into it. Corrective action will be taken after going through its report.

Chidambaram reiterated that the important task before the government is to regain the control of areas which are under the Maoist dominance. He said the success experienced by some states in handling the Naxalites problem will also be taken into consideration by the forces in future.
