Request for MNP increases by 4.98 million: TRAI

The mobile number portability, MNP, requests in the country have increased by 4.98 million in a month. In June this year, 54.33 million subscribers requested for MNP while in July it reached to 59.31 million. This was revealed in the data provided by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, TRAI. However, the number of telephone subscribers has declined by over 2 per cent. There were 965.52 million subscribers in June this year as against 944.81 million in July.

The share of urban subscribers has also declined to 63.83 per cent from 64.40 per cent whereas share of rural subscribers has increased to 36.17 per cent in July. With this, the overall tele density in India also decreased to 77.79 per cent at the end of July, from 79.58 percent in the previous month.
The data shows that the total wireless subscriber base decreased from 934.09 million in June this year to 913.49 million at the end of July, registering a decline of 2.21 per cent in monthly growth rate. The decline is due to large scale disconnections by some of the service providers.
