In Sri Lanka, election commission has said that repeated postponement of local elections in the country has caused damage to democratic values in the country. <br/><br/>Chairman of election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said during a press conference today that elections should be held as soon as possible and people should be given their democratic right to exercise their franchise. His comments came as local elections in the country has been postponed for more than a year on various grounds including delimitation of wards.<br/><br/>The delimitation committee was supposed to submit its report last week but the concerned minister refused to accept the report on technical grounds. Analysts believe that both the ruling parties are averse to holding elections at this stage as the results could expose their falling popularity. The commission head said that local minister has been vested with powers to reform the electoral system and he is ready to hold the elections within 90 days of finalizing of delimitation report.
