Renowned Sarangi player Ustad Sultan Khan passes away

Renowned Sarangi player and classical singer Ustad Sultan Khan passed away Sunday afternoon in Mumbai. He was 71 years old. He was not well since last two months.

Ustad Sultan Khan was an exponent in Hindustani classical music. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, in 2010 .

Sultan Khan won numerous musical awards including, twice, the Sangeet Natya Academy Award along with the Gold Medalist Award of Maharashtra state and the American Academy of Artists Award in 1998. Sultan Khan had many national and international collaboration to his name. He was one of the members of the Indian fusion group Tabla Beat Science, with famous table player Zakir Hussain and American bassist Bill Laswell. He has performed on an international scale with Ravi Shankar on George Harrison`s 1974 Dark Horse World Tour. He had also contributed vocals and sarangi to Gavin Harrison`s 1998 solo album Sanity & Gravity.
