Removal of Gov Beniwal as per Constitution: Parliamentary Affairs Minister

Government today came under severe attack from political parties for removing Mizoram Governor Kamla Beniwal from her post.

Congress termed it as a flagrant violation of not only the Constitution but also the Supreme Court judgement on the issue.

Party leader Manish Tewari demanded an explanation from the government.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament House, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said it is political vendetta and most unfortunate act on the part of the government.

Justifying the action, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu said there is no politics involved in the removal of Beniwal.

He said the action against Beniwal has been taken according to constitutional provisions and it is also not in violation of the Supreme Court judgement.

Removal and appointment of Governors is the prerogative of the government, but, according to the Supreme Court judgment, a Governor cannot be removed on the ground that he or she is out of sync with the policies and ideologies of the party in power at the Centre.

Beniwal was yesterday sacked as Governor of Mizoram just two months before the end of her tenure.

In her previous stint as Governor of Gujarat, she had differences on a number of issues with the then Narendra Modi government in the State.

She is the second Governor to be sacked after the removal of Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Virendra Kataria.
