In Maharashtra, the mortal remains of the departed senior social worker Sadhana Amte, wife of the Magsaysay Award winner late Baba Amte, were laid to rest at Anandwan premises in Warora taluka of Chandrapur district this morning. The burial took place after paying homage, the gathering bid tearful adieu to the Sadhana Amte, the epitome of compassion and mother-figure for followers. Her body was buried close to the memorial of her husband.Sadhana Amte had passed away yesterday after prolonged illness. She was 86. She is survived by sons Dr Vikas, and Magsaysay Award winner Dr Prakash Amte. Popularly known as Sadhana-`tai', she supported her husband actively when he started a rehabilitation colony for leprosy patients, `Anandwan', several decades ago. She also stood by him all through the struggle and turbulent phases of life including the Narmada Bachao Andolan. Her autobiography, ‘Samidha’ is a document of the dreams they dreamt for humankind and their struggle to put life into them. She was conferred upon many awards in recognition of her service including Chaturang Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 2007 for her notable contribution in the field of social work. Several leaders including Union Rural Development Minister Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh, Union Power Minister Mr. Sushilkumar Shinde and BJP National President Mr. Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra Chief Minister Mr. Prithviraj Chavan, have mourned the death of Sadhana Amte.
