In Uttarakhand, relief and rescue operations are continuing in full swing by the ITBP and Army in Uttarkashi district hit by flash floods yesterday. 27 people were washed away and many more are missing. The death toll is likely to increase as many areas are still inaccessible with telecommunication links severed with district headquarters. Nineteen labourers of the state-run Uttarakhand Jalvikash Nigam Limited's Assi Ganga Hydel Project are reported to have gone missing following a cloud burst in the upper hills of Uttarkashi district. State Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna said that the administration is taking all possible steps to reach relief in far flung villages. He said the villagers along the banks of major rivers have been alerted as water level is rising. People have been asked to move to safer places, if possible. He said drinking water supply in many areas is also affected and administration is trying to reach out food and medicines to the affected people.
The flash floods were triggered by heavy rains. Three jawans of fire services were also killed in Gangotri following heavy rain. Flash floods have flattened homes and left many pilgrims stranded. Water level of Bhagirathi and Ganga rivers is rising. Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Almora districts of the state are affected by incessant rain. All the major Hydro power projects have been shut down in the state till the situation improves. Many rope ways across the rivers and rivulets have been damaged snapping communication links with several villages. Schools have been closed in Uttarkashi for the next 5 days. Char Dham Yaatra has been suspended due to bad weather.
State Cabinet Minister, Pritam Singh Panwar is personally supervising the relief and rescue works and closely monitoring the situation. Chief Minister has announced emergency relief of 2,700 rupees to each of the affected families.
