In Sikkim, the Border Roads Organisation has succeeded in reopening the road leading to the most sought after tourists spots of Chhangu and Nathula in East district on Thursday. AIR correspondent reports, this has brought the much needed relief to the tourism industry of the State as this year’s tourists’ season begins from Sunday.Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh had announced in Gangtok on Thursday that the road leading to Chungthang in the earthquake ravaged North district will be re-opened soon.Meanwhile people are trying to overcome the trauma of the September 18 earthquake.The Gangtok-Nathula Jawaharlal Nehru Road too had got blocked by massive landslides triggered by the earthquake. Huge deposits of slush and boulders as well as washed away portions of the road at more than twenty five places all along his route had rendered the entire Chhangu-Nathula-Baba Mandir area completely out of bounds for every one.Now, while the popular tourists’ destination like high altitude Gurudongmar lake and a picturesque Yumthang valley in the North district still remain inaccessible, the tourism industry has started fastening its belt to welcome the visiting tourists in other parts of the State.On the other hand, with the people of Sikkim still trying hard to forget the agony of the September 18 earthquake, ten day long Dussehera or Bara Dasai vacations, are set to begin from Sunday the 2nd October, in the State. However, the State Government has assured that rehabilitation and restoration works will not be allowed to be hampered at all, and a fair balance will be maintained between them and the festivities, which will certainly be a low key affair this time.
