India has said that its relationship with Sri Lanka is critically important. Talking to reporters in New Delhi today following one-to-one talks with the visiting Sri Lanka Foreign Minister G L Peiris, the External Affairs Minister Mr. S.M.Krishna said that Colombo is a reliable partner and steadfast friend of New Delhi. The visiting dignitary is believed to have briefed his counterpart on the Sri Lankan government's position on the controversial Darusman Report relating to human rights violation. Prof. Peiris is also to brief the Indian lealders on measures taken by the Sri Lankan government in relation to its reconciliation process and its progress during his stay. Prof. Peiris will leave for China on a similar mission to discuss the Darusman Report with the Chinese government.A recommendation in the Darusman Report to establish an immediate international justice mechanism to inquire into alleged human rights violations and war crimes based on reporting by the UN Secretary General's panel, was rejected by European Parliament on Thursday.
