The government today admitted that the target of cent per cent registration of deaths and births in the country has not been achieved because of several reasons. Giving this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Ajay Maken said at national level, about 74 per cent births and 69 per cent deaths are registered. He said the level of registration of births and deaths varies from state to state. The Minister said lack of awareness in general public, lack of utility of birth and death certificate and lack of coordination between various departments, are some of the reasons for not achieving the target.
