The regional Seminar for Asian Parliaments on preventing and responding to Violence against women and girl concluded today in New Delhi. The three day seminar spread over eight sessions discussed issues related to creation of an environment to prevent Violence against women and girl including appropriate legislations.
It was organized jointly by the Parliament of India and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) . The President of the IPU, Dr. Theo-Ben Gurirab, while commending the meaningful deliberations, hoped that the findings of the Seminar would pave the way to credible actions among the Governments concerned to deal with the problem .
Lok Sabha Speaker Mrs. Meira Kumar, while inaugurating the Seminar for Asian Parliaments on Thursday,reiterated India’s commitment to eliminate violence against women. Mrs. Kumar also emphasised the need for an attitudinal change in the mindsets of men to empower women educationally and to strengthen institutional mechanisms to ensure decisive action.
