Regional Community Radio Sammelan in Chennai to Mark 20 Years of Community Radio in India

Information and Broadcasting Ministry is organising a two day regional Community Radio Sammelan at Anna University in Chennai from tomorrow. It is a celebration to mark the twenty years of Community Radio in India. During the Occasion, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur will deliver his keynote address. All the 117 Community Radio Stations of southern States and Union Territories will take part in the event.The Sammelan is being inaugurated on the occasion of World Radio Day which will be celebrated tomorrow.<br />''<br />''<span style="color: #222222;">Community Radio is the third tier in Radio Broadcasting, distinct from Public Service Radio broadcasting and Commercial Radio. The journey of Community Radio started in year 2002 in the country. Community Radio has the potential to strengthen people's participation in development programmes through its holistic approach. It is considered as a powerful medium of the marginalised sections of society to voice their concerns. As community radio broadcasts its programme in local languages and dialects, the people are able to relate to it instantly. In the last 9 years, the Community Radio sector has grown substantially with the support of the government and the number of Radio Stations has increased from 140 in 2014 to 481 in 2023.</span><br />
