'Red shirt' general Seh Daeng dead as Bangkok toll hits 35

In violence hit Thailand, the renegade General who was at the centre of violent anti-government protests in Bangkok has died in hospital. Major-General Khattiya Sawasdipol, known as Seh Daeng, had been in a coma after being shot in the head by a sniper last week. Clashes between the protestors and troops in Bangkok have been reported as the stand-off between the government and the protestors continues. Reports said, at least three commercial buildings have been gutted by fire and one store has been ransacked. In the three days since his shooting, 34 civilians and one member of the military have died in clashes that erupted between Red Shirts and troops on the fringes of the demonstrators' camp. Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva had accused Seh Daeng, who was suspended from duty in January, of trying to prevent an end to the demonstrations. Thai authorities have rejected any foreign mediation in their confrontation with the demonstrators. Many of the protestors are besieged by the Thai army in a camp in central Bangkok. The protestors maintain their offer for talks on the condition that they may be mediated by the United Nations and the government remove troops from the streets.
