Recruitment of minorities in government jobs increases

Recruitment of minorities in government jobs has gone up to 7.9 per cent in 2009-10 from 6.7 per cent in 2006-07 while their share in priority lending has moved up to 13.01 per cent.The facts came up during a meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday in which the functioning of various schemes of Minority Affairs Ministry including Prime Minister's 15-point programme for the welfare of minorities was reviewed. The progress of different scholarship schemes of the ministry was also reviewed.The programme was introduced in 2006 with a view to incorporate specific interventions so that benefit of various government schemes for the underprivileged reach the disadvantaged sections of the minority communities.The Cabinet has held over six review meetings since the introduction of the programme. Government has fixed a target of 15 per cent for minorities in priority sector lending. Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid expressed satisfaction with the rise in employment figures of minorities.
