Record production to bring down inflation: Thomas

The Government has said food inflation will come down in view of record production of foodgrains. In an exclusive interview to All India Radio Minster of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Pubic Distribution Prof. K V Thomas said inflation was governed by several reasons, including international market trend. The hike in petroleum prices also reflects on the price of essential commodities.Prof. Thomas said that the farmers concentrate much on pre-harvest operations, but less on post-harvest operations. They are being awakened in this regard. He said efforts should be made to develop such a mechanism that would provide reasonable price to formers and affordable price to the consumer. He said that storage was very important to maintain balance between demand and supply. The Government is trying its best to enhance the storage of food grains so that the gap between demand and supply may be rationalised. In reply to a question, Prof. Thomas said our public distribution system has been working very efficiently. The Government is giving sufficient foodgrains and sugar to distribute through PDS, but it is up to the states how they manage it.Speaking on Food Security Bill, Prof. Thomas said it started moving since 2009. Now the draft Bill has been prepared and after completing constitutional process, it will go to Parliament.
