Record $1.9bn settlement by HSBC bank over money laundering charges by US regulators

Reports from the United States say the British Bank HSBC will pay a record 1.9 billion dollars to the American authorities in a settlement over allegations of money laundering. The deal could be announced today. HSBC's reputation was tarnished over claims that it laundered money for Iran and enabled Mexican drug cartels to launder money through the American financial system. As part of the settlement the British bank is believed to be paying 1.9 billion dollars, the largest ever in such a case. Since January 2009 American regulators have been trying to crack down on banks that have laundered money. Yesterday, US authorities announced a 327 million dollar settlement with Standard Chartered. The Bank had already paid a similar amount to a New York regulator back in August.Over money laundering Reports from the United States say British Bank HSBC will pay a record 1.9 billion dollars to American authorities in a settlement over allegations of money laundering.
