The government on Thursday said, the recommendation of the working groups related to the issues of road safety are being examined. Briefing reporters in New Delhi, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Mr A. K. Upadhaya said that Working groups, set up by his Ministry have submitted their final reports and will be placed before the National Road Safety Council for deliberation and finalizing a detailed action plan at national level. It can also be replicated by all the State Governments.
Some of the recommendations include creation of a separate Road Safety Education and Awareness Fund, all firms involved with roads should be encouraged to undertake corporate social responsibility activities relating to the road safety.
Review and Audit of the existing schemes on medical service, setting up of Regional Referral Trauma Centres supported by a Heli- Ambulance network to ensure speedy care to the severely injured are also the highlight of the recommendations.
Working groups have also suggested proper amendment in Motor Vehicles Act 1988 to increase penalties and fines for traffic offences. Transport Ministry Data also says that around 4.9 lakh road accidents occurred in 2009 resulted in over 1.25 lakh deaths and injured over 5 lakh persons across the country.
