Reasons unlimited: No of tourists to India low

The number of foreign tourist arrivals into India from Japan and United Kingdom has declined during the last three years due to various reasons, including the global financial slowdown, terrorist attacks, H1N1 pandemic. The Minister of State for Tourism, Sultan Ahmed informed the Lok Sabha on Friday that the number of foreign tourists to India from Japan has come down from 1.45 lakh in 2007 to 1.24 lakh in 2009 and that of United Kingdom from 7.96 lakh to 7.48 lakh in the same period. The Minister said there was also a marginal decline in the number of tourists from Pakistan and Bangladesh. Ahmed said the Government had taken several steps to attract more foreign tourists. They include introduction of visa on arrival for tourists from Singapore, Finland, New Zealand, Luxembourg and Japan on a pilot basis for a period of one year.
