The government today said it is ready for an inquiry into the allegations that Walmart bribed Indian officials and lobbied its entry into India. Sharing the concern of the members, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath informed both the Houses that the government is ready for a discussion on the issue. Mr. Kamal nath said the government will make a statement later in the day after getting the facts.
The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the second time till 2 PM following the insistence of the opposition members for a discussion even after Mr Kamal Nath clarified the government's stand. Earlier, Mr Yashwant Sinha of the BJP demanded a time-bound judicial probe into the matter as it involves the country's image. However, several opposition members continued raising slogans in the well of the House, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House.
In the Rajya Sabha, Mr Venkiah Naidu of the BJP raised the matter when the House re-assembled at Noon after two earlier adjournments. He demanded a thorough discussion followed by an inquiry into the matter. Mr Sitaram Yechury of the CPM said it is a serious matter. Stating that lobbying in India is illegal, Mr Yechury said his party will move a separate notice for a structured discussion on the issue.
