Ready for CBI probe in Games’ scandal: Reddy

Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy has said the Government was willing to ask the CBI to look into charges of irregularities by state agencies involved in Commonwealth Games' projects. Talking to media outside Parliament, Raddy said each of the allegations would be looked into. He also said that the Organising Committee of the Games, which has been facing allegations of corruption, should not be confused with Government agencies as it was totally independent. Reddy also accused the Opposition of projecting incorrect figures on the expenditure incurred for the mega event. The issue of alleged large-scale corruption in Commonwealth Games projects created a furore in the Lok Sabha on Friday with the Opposition attacking the Government on allowing squandering and loot public money. The Left demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe the charges.Reddy, who heads the Group of Ministers on the Games, was not allowed to respond to the charges by the Opposition, which wanted the reply only after a full-fledged debate.Earlier raising the issue, CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta said that huge amounts of money, in excess of legitimate expenditure, were being spent on the building and renovation of the stadia and the construction was also below standard. Samajwadi Party members, who wanted the Prime Minister to respond on the issue, staged a walkout.Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told Lok Sabha that round-the-clock healthcare facilities would be provided at all venues of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. He said dedicated polyclinics with all the medical facilities and the state-of-art equipment would be set up in the Games village.
