‘R&D in agri must to compete with China’

Investment in agricultural research and development needs to be enhanced to keep pace with China and other developed nations. This was stated by Indian Agricultural Research Institute Director H S Gupta in New Delhi today. Expressing concern over low investment in this sector, he emphasised the need to develop new seeds and technologies for increasing farm production. Gupta said India's investment in R & D constitutes only 0.5% of the total farm GDP while China has close to 1% and it is almost 2.5% in developed countries. The IARI Director expressed confidence that the country will meet the food grains requirement of 2020 with the help of current technology. He said that the demand of over 130 million tonnes of rice and 110 million tonnes of wheat in 2010 will be easily met. AIR correspondent reports that India produced a record 80.71 million tonnes of wheat in the crop year 2009-10 while production of rice stood at 89.13 million tonnes in the same cycle.
