RBI has asked banks to supply at least 40 per cent of currency to rural areas, after observing that bank notes, being supplied to rural areas, at present, are not in proportion with the requirements of rural population. <br/><br/>In a notification today, the apex bank advised banks to increase supply of fresh notes and asked currency chests to issue lower denomination notes in villages and rural centers. The RBI also advised banks to adopt a need based approach.
