Ratification of extradition treaty between India, Indonesia deferred

The ratification of the extradition treaty between India and Indonesia that was expected to be completed by the two countries today could not be executed as Indonesia was unable to process some key documents in time.

The necessary documents were to be exchanged between the two sides after talks between visiting Vice-President Hamid Ansari and his Indonesian counterpart Yusuf Kalla. However, some legal technicalities associated with the documents could not be completed by Indonesia because of which the treaty could not come into force.

The two countries, however, inked agreements on new and renewable sources of energy and cultural exchange. Mr Ansari told reporters here that the process for ratification of the treaty was on and would be completed soon. Asked about the extradition of underworld dawn Chhota Rajan, the Vice President said that the matter was being dealt with by security agencies and Indonesia was fully cooperating with India in this regard. The two countries had signed the extradition treaty in 2011.
