RAPS-6 synchronised with Northern grid by NPCIL

<br/>In a further boost to the nuclear power capacity in the country, the sixth 220 MW unit of the Rajasthan Atomic Power Project has been synchronised with the Northern grid on Sunday by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India. NPCIL in a statement in Mumbai said that the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board had provided the necessary authorisation for synchronisation of RAPS-6 with the grid and commercial operation would commence shortly taking the nuclear power capacity to 4560 Mega Watt.<br/><br/>RAPS-6 is a 220 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR), located at Rawatbhata in district Chittorgarh in Rajasthan where five PHWRs are already in operation. The power from this unit will be shared by the beneficiaries of Northern Electricity Region. <br/><br/>With the completion of four nuclear reactors currently under advance stages of construction, nuclear power capacity in the country will rise to 7280 MW. In addition, the work on four 700 MW PHWRs including two at Rawatbhata site has started. These reactors are slated for completion by 2017.
