The Union Minister for State of Environment and Forests, Mr. Jairam Ramesh has underlined the need for more scientific research to find out the causes of melting of glaciers. Releasing the working paper on Himalayan glaciers in New Delhi today, the Minister said that more talented and capable scientists are needed for this purpose as the studies takes more time on this issue. He said that 15 automated weather stations are being set up across the country to know the impact of climate change on glaciers. He said that each station will cost 20 lakh rupees. Mr. Ramesh said that 4 crore rupees will be spent on TERI Institute for Black Carbon study and its impact on glaciers. He said that the ministry is also working with ISRO for satellite mapping of various glaciers on which 8 crore rupees will be spent in three years.
