Ramesh hopeful of passage of National Green Tribunal Bill in current session of parliament
Union Forest and Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has expressed hope that the National Green Tribunal Bill will be passed in the current session of the parliament. Addressing the Seventh convocation of National Institute of Forest Management at Bhopal this morning, he said that this bill, which is being discussed in the parliament, will give a right to clean environment to every citizen of India. Under this law one could go to Green Tribunal and claim civil damage for air, water and land pollution and forest destruction.

After the passing of the bill India will probably become the first country of the world to have such a vast net work of environmental courts. Mr. Ramesh expressed hope that these courts will start functioning this year. He said that the Green Tribunal will have four circuit benches in different regions. Stressing on the need of a new generation of people and mind set to look upon forest as economic, social and ecological resources, Mr. Ramesh said that the central government is going to establish and independent National Environment Protection Authority to monitor the implementation of various environmental laws He further said that after the bifurcation of Union forest and environment ministry, focus of the forest department will be more on field management.

Later talking to media Mr. Ramesh denied that his ministry is creating obstacles in the projects of Surface and Transport Ministry and said 98 per cent projects of that ministry have been cleared. He also said that situation in nine National Tiger Reserves in the country is not satisfactory. In some reserves mining and real estate mafia is active.
