Bhopal is observing the 27th anniversary of internationally known Bhopal gas leak tragedy. It was on the intervening night of 2nd and 3rd December of 1984 when the tragedy had struck claiming more than three thousand human lives and maiming thousands of survivors. Rallies, demonstrations, seminars and exhibitions are being held by various organizations to mark the occasion.An all religion prayer meeting was held at Bhopal ‘s Barkatullah Bhawan this morning. Governor Ramnaresh Yadav and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan were present on the occasion. Several non government organisations are organising rallies, public meetings, effigy burning and torch marches against the Union Carbide.Some organizations tried to stop trains also demanding the government to present in the Supreme Court the correct figures about the deaths and injuries caused during the tragedy. Some other organizations held demonstrations in the city demanding that Dow’s name be removed from the sponsorship of London Olympics.Dow is the present owner of the Union Carbide company which was then responsible for the Bhopal gas disaster Meanwhile, the Police used force and lobbed tear gas to disperse the gas victims who were trying to stop trains at Bhopal’s Aishbagh Railway crossing.The situation became tense when some anti-social elements started stone pelting. Protestors remained on the railway tracks for more than two hours, affecting normal rail services. These protestors were demanding that the government should present in the Supreme Court the correct figures about the deaths and injuries caused by the tragedy.
