Rajya Sabha witnesses repeated adjournments over govt formation in Goa, Manipur

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 PM today following uproar over the government formation in Goa and Manipur. Earlier, the House witnessed two adjournments for a brief period each in the pre-lunch session on the same issue.<br/><br/>Congress members continued to troop into the well of the House raising slogans against the government and forced repeated adjournments.<br/><br/>Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said, the formation of government in Goa and Manipur is a threat to democracy. Following noisy scenes, Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari adjourned the House.<br/><br/>Earlier, raising the issue, Congress' Anand Sharma said, BJP has defied the judgments of two Constitutional Benches of the Supreme Court that have mandated Governors to invite the leader of the single largest party first to form the government in case no party gets a clear majority. <br/><br/>He said in Goa and Manipur, the Congress that emerged as the single largest party should have been given the first opportunity to form the government, adding the denial of the right is against democratic principles.<br/><br/>However, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the Governors of both the states have acted only in accordance with the Constitutional provisions. He said the Congress is not gracious enough to accept the people's mandate.
