The Rajya Sabha has taken up a Calling Attention notice on the situation arising out of the recent floods in various parts of the country, particularly in Assam. <br/><br/>Initiating the discussion in the post lunch session, Ripun Bora of the Congress said this year's floods are unprecedented. He said 83 people were killed due to floods. He charged the BJP government in the state with not making contingent plans.<br/><br/> Prasanna Acharya of the Biju Janata Dal said Odisa has always been a natural calamity prone state in the country. He said most of parts of the state have suffered heavy damages.<br/><br/>A Home Ministry statement said Assam faces acute flood problem in the flood plains of the river Brahmaputra and Barak and other smaller river sub-basins. <br/><br/>The state has faced two waves of floods till 19th of July, 2017 affecting 29 out of 33 districts resulting in loss of human lives, livestock and large scale damage to the dwelling houses. <br/><br/>The Statement said at present the situation is under control and the state government is closely monitoring rescue and relief operations to deal with eventuality. <br/><br/>Home ministry is also keeping constant round-the-clock watch on the situation in the country including Assam. The Statement said in order to assess the loss of immediate nature, upon receipt of interim memorandum an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) was constituted on 21st of July 2017. <br/><br/>The Ministry has deployed about 88 specialized teams of NDRF in 26 states and Union territories with 304 boats and necessary search and rescue equipment.
