Rajya Sabha proceedings remain disrupted over Lalit Modi row

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day today on the Lalit Modi controversy with the agitated Congress members continuously demanding the resignation of top BJP leaders including External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. The House was adjourned twice in the pre-lunch session on the same issue. When the House met at 2 PM after the second adjournment, Congress members again trooped into the well of the House raising slogans.

Some of the BJP members also raised counter-slogans. Amid slogan-shouting, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Pratap Rudy, tried in vain to move the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill, 2013 for consideration and passing on behalf of his colleague and Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension, Jitendra Singh.

Deputy Chairman Prof. P J Kurien asked the Congress members not to indulge in slogan shouting. He repeatedly reminded them that Parliament is for debates and discussions. Mr Kurien also warned that he is compelled to adjourn the House. As uproarious scenes continued, he adjourned the House for the day. The House was subject to repeated adjournments since the commencement of Monsoon Session on 21st of July.
