Rajya Sabha adjourned thrice in pre-lunch session till 1230 hrs today

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned thrice in the pre-lunch session till 1230 hrs today on the issue of reconstitution of various commissions dealing with Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Minorities and Backward Classes. Congress-led opposition raised the issue as soon as the House met for the day. This is for the second day today the issue was raised amidst noisy scenes. <br/><br/>The opposition members trooped into the well raising slogans. Responding to this, Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu said, the government is in the process of reconstituting the commissions. He said, the opposition wants to mislead the country on the issue. He said, these commissions are functioning and the process to fill up vacancies is on. Mr. Naidu said, the opposition is not ready to hear the truth. He said, the country has given a clear mandate to the ruling party and backward classes have supported the NDA in recently held elections in Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal. Earlier opposition members including Ramgopal Yadav of SP and Mayawati of BSP alleged that senior posts in these commissions are vacant and people are not getting relief from them. <br/><br/>They wanted to know from the government that when these vacancies will be filled up. Mr. Yadav alleged that the government wants to delete names of some castes from the OBC lists. Shouting slogans against the government, opposition members came to the well of the House. As the pandemonium continued, Deputy Chairman P J Kurien adjourned the proceedings first for ten minutes and then for 25 minutes.<br/><br/>The situation was no different when the House re-assembled at noon to take up Question Hour. The Congress-led opposition members again trooped into the well raising slogans. Some ruling party members also raised counter slogans from their seats. Following this, Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari adjourned the House till 1230 hrs.
