Rajya Sabha adjourned on demonetization issue

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned today till 2 30PM with Opposition members sticking to their demand that Prime Minister should be present in the House and apologize for his reported remarks against them on demonetization.

This was countered by BJP members by raising slogans. When Chairman Hamid Ansari tried to take up Question Hour, opposition members trooped into the well. Mr Ansari observed that the agitating members should raise slogans on the streets and not in the House. He adjourned the House as noisy scenes prevailed.

Earlier, the government made it clear that there was no political motive behind deployment of Army at toll plazas in West Bengal yesterday and it was a part of routine annual exercise being carried in several states since last month. Minister of State for Defence, Dr Subhash Ramrao Bhamre told the House during Zero Hour in response to Opposition's allegation that the West Bengal government was not informed in advance about Army deployment. Refuting the charges, the Minister asserted that the Army exercise was conducted in coordination with local police authorities.

Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu appealed to the Opposition not to drag Army into controversy and politicise the issue.

Earlier, raising the issue, Leader of Opposition Gulam Nabi Azad alleged that the West Bengal state police had no information about Army exercise and sought a clarification on the issue. Sukhendu Sekhar Roy of Trinamool Congress claimed that Army has taken over in all the 19 toll plazas in the state overnight.
