Rajya Sabha adjourned for day over National Herald issue

Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day after repeated adjurnments in the day ,as for the fourth consecutive day, Congress members protested on the 'National Herald' issue. Throughout the day, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned repeatedly on the issue. When it re-assembled at 2.30 after four adjournments over the National Herald case, the opposition members objected to extending the House beyond 5 PM to consider listed legislative business.

They wanted that Chair should take the sense of the House whether to sit beyond 5 PM on Friday pleading that members leave for their constituencies at the end of the day. However, the treasury benches insisted that the sense of the House should be at 5 PM after the Private Members' Business. Afterwards in the day, Deputy Chairman Prof. P J Kurien ruled the sense of the House is that it will not sit beyond 5 P.M. today.

When the House met at 3:30 P.M., leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad denied that his party colleagues are disrupting the proceedings of the House for the previous few days because of National Herald issue. He said that the Congress party had been demanding action against the Chief Ministers of three BJP-ruled states on corruption charges since Monsoon Session.

Mr Azad said till today no action was taken nor any FIR has been filed against the Chief Ministers. Responding to Mr Azad's clarification, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said it was the perception that the opposition is stalling the proceedings on National Herald issue. However, he hoped that the House can function normally from Monday.
