Rajnath Singh assures NIA probe into Assam violence; Death toll rises to 73

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh left Guwahati for violence hit Vishwanath Charyali area of Sonitpur district in Assam. Mr. Singh will hold talks with Senior officials about the current situation. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi , Union Minister of Home Mr. Kiren Rijiju and Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram are accompanying the Home Minister.

Earlier Mr. Singh assured Assam Chief Minister of an NIA investigation into the recent violence in the state. He arrived at Guwahati yesterday evening and held a high level meeting with the Chief Minister, and senior civil, police, army and para-military officials. Mr. Singh assured the Assam government of all helps to contain insurgency. Mr Gogoi also requested the Home minister not to withdraw additional security forces from the state till the situation is brought under control.

Assam Home Commissioner Pratik Hajela said that the situation is stable. The death toll in the recent violence in the State has gone up to 73.Official sources said, fourteen thousand people have taken shelter in relief camps in four districts.
Meanwhile, the army and police has decided to launch operation against National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Sangbijit faction) at remote areas of Indo- Bhutan areas. 10 columns of army are staging flag march in five districts. IG Police, L R Bishnoi said that 2 miscreants were arrested near Hel River in Kokrajhar for allegedly killing a civilian.
