Rajnath calls on Sri Lankan PM; discusses regional peace

Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh today called on the visiting Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe in New Delhi. <br/><br/>According to an official release, Mr Singh said, both the countries share objectives for regional peace, security, commitment to fight terrorism and maritime safety in the Indian Ocean. He said, South Asia needs to develop a clear response to terrorist infrastructure in the region.<br/><br/>Mr Singh appreciated Sri Lanka that it is in general agreement with India on the need for an UN Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT). <br/><br/>He said, in their view the finalization of the CCIT is urgently required as such a legal framework would provide clarity to a unified strategy to confront global terrorism. <br/><br/>He said, the first meeting of the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) on Security Cooperation should be convened to discuss cooperation in countering terrorism and drug trafficking. <br/><br/>Besides, other subjects of interest of the two countries were also discussed. These include quicker disposal of Letters Rogatory, cooperation in transfer of sentenced persons and cooperation in capacity building and training.
