Senior IAS officer Rajiv Mehrishi was appointed as Union Home Secretary, replacing L C Goyal. Mr Goyal's two year tenure as Home Secretary was to end after about one and half years. Mehrishi, a 1978-batch Rajasthan cadre IAS officer, was serving as Secretary, Economic Affairs in the Finance Ministry.<br/><br/>In a release, Department of Personnel and Training said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the appointment of Mehrishi as Home Secretary for a period of two years with effect from today. The Prime Minister has also approved Mr Goyal's request for voluntary retirement from government service due to personal reasons. <br/><br/>Meanwhile, Mr. Goyal has been appointed as Chairman and Managing Director of India Trade Promotion Organisation.<br/><br/>Mr. Goyal had taken over as Home Secretary nearly seven months back on February when the then incumbent Anil Goswami was sacked after he allegedly tried to prevent CBI from arresting former Union Minister Matang Singh in connection with Saradha chit fund scam case.
