Rajapaksa wins Sri Lankan Presidential poll

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa today won a second term in office trouncing united opposition candidate Sarath Fonseka. In a bitterly-fought contest 64-year-old Rajapaksa secured 5.9 million votes that is 58 per cent against Fonseka's 4.1 million or 40 per cent in the total of 70 per cent votes cast.

As the election trends started coming in, tension soared in the capital as heavily-armed soldiers drove in and surrounded the lake-front luxury hotel in central Colombo, where Fonseka is staying. Later, Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said the troops had been deployed following information that army deserters were among 400 people present inside. Our correspondent reports that contrary to fears expressed, the first peacetime presidential election, following the defeat of the LTTE last May, was held yesterday without any serious incidents of violence.
