Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be sworn in tomorrow for his second term. He was re-elected by a thumping majority defeating the common opposition candidate and former Army chief, Sarath Fonseka, in the January Presidential election this year. To coincide with his birthday and a day before the beginning of his new term, the Sri Lankan President commissioned the first stage of the ‘Magama Ruhunupura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port’ at Hambantota, south of Sri Lanka today. The port has been built with the assistance of China.Speaking on the occasion to mark the ceremonial berthing of the first vessel, the Sri Lankan President giving the example of the emerging economies India and China , said that Sri Lanka wants to be a part of this Asian emergence .The main opposition criticized the port stating it as the biggest white elephant ever built in Sri Lanka and that it will serve no purpose for the people of the region.Meanwhile, the main opposition United National Party ( UNP) said that they would boycott tomorrow’s swearing in ceremony of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to protest against government’s extravagant spending for the purpose.Addressing a news conference, UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya said that in the past swearing in ceremonies of the Presidents have been modest ones.
