Rajapaksa to appoint committee on ethnic conflict

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has resolved to constitute a committee to take stock of the ‘lessons learnt’ in the aftermath of the defeat of the LTTE and the way the ethnic conflict evolved in the island nation since 1975.<br/><br/>Briefing the media today, Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights, Mahinda Samarasinghe said that the planned committee will look into the root causes which gave birth to a guerilla outfit like the LTTE and suggest ways to cope with the challenges posed by the post-war scenario.<br/><br/>Minister Samarasinghe also said that UN Secretary General had been conveyed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa regarding the intention of appointing a committee. On March 6 in the course of a telephone conversation Sri Lanka President had told the UN Secretary General that Mr. Ban Ki-Moon’s decision to appoint a committee of experts to advice the Secretary General on Sri Lanka as unwarranted and told him that he would soon send a formal communication.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) comprising of 124 member States has condemned the intention of the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to appoint a Panel of Experts to advice on accountability issues relating to Sri Lanka, said Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights, Mahinda Samarasinghe at a media briefing today .<br/><br/>The Minister said that the Chair of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement, Ambassador and Permanent Representative, Maged A. Abdelaziz has stated in his letter, "the Non- Aligned Movement strongly condemns selective targeting of individual countries which it deems contrary to the Founding Principles of the Movement and the United Nations Charter".
