Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered the Police Chief to conduct an urgent inquiry into the attack on the Lanka e news office in Malabe, Presidential Spokesman Bandula Jayasekera ,was quoted to have said by the local media. According to the media personnel present in the office of the Lanka e news, which is considered critical of the government here , a group of men reportedly broke into the office of the news website and set it on fire on wee hours of the morning . There have been a series of attacks against journalists and media institutions n Sri Lanka in the last few years but no arrests have been made so far. Prageeth Ekneligoda, a columnist for LankaeNews.com, disappeared a year ago and is suspected to have been abducted. His wife wrote to U.N. Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon earlier this month, saying that the government has showed no interest in investigating the case. She said she suspected the government was complicit in her husband's disappearance. Earlier this month, Sri Lankan journalists and right groups had staged a protest demanding justice for attacks, killings, and disappearances of media workers.
