Rajapaksa assures speedy rehabilitation of displaced Tamils

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa assured that he is determined to evolve a political settlement acceptable to all communities along with speedy rehabilitation of displaced Tamils. <br/><br/>Mr Rajapaksam, who is on a four-day visit to India told a delegation of DMK and Congress MPs from Tamil Nadu that over 54,000 Tamils displaced due to the civil war there will be resettled in their towns and villages within three months. <br/><br/>The visiting President also told the delegation led by DMK Parliamentary Party leader T R Baalu that his government is committed to implement the 13th Amendment under the 1987 Indo-Sri Lanka accord.<br/><br/> Earlier, the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh urged Sri Lankan President, Mahinda Rajapaksa to initiate a meaningful devolution package to resolve the ethnic issue. <br/><br/>Dr. Singh also called for urgent steps to re-settle the displaced Tamil civilians who continue to remain in relief camps. <br/><br/>Briefing reporters after the delegation level talks between the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh and the visiting Sri Lankan President, the Foreign Secretary, Ms. Nirupama Rao said that the Prime Minister conveyed India's concerns over the plight of displaced Tamils.
