Raja Ram Mohan Roy: A reformer, scholar and harbinger of Indian Renaissance

Today is the death anniversary of one of India's greatest revolutionaries, Raja Ram Mohan Roy. A reformer, scholar and harbinger of the Indian Renaissance, Roy breathed his last on this day in 1833 in Bristol, England. Right from his childhood, Ram Mohan Roy rebelled against superstitions and social customs.<br />”&nbsp;<br />”He travelled widely and gained broad outlook. He was an advocate of studying English, Science, Western Medicine and Technology to broaden ones knowledge and overview. Roy founded Atmiya Sabha for social and religious reforms in the society, and campaigned for women's rights. He is considered a pioneer in fighting for the right for widows to remarry, and the right for women to hold property. He also supported the education of women.<br />”&nbsp;<br />”<span style="color: #222222;">In 1828, Roy founded the Brahmo Samaj which was one of the first socio-religious reform organisations in the country. He fought for the abolition of the gruesome practice of sati.</span><br />
