Rains lash Andhra, Tamil Nadu coastal areas

In Andhra Pradesh, heavy rain in the wake of depression in the Bay of Bengal have inundated crops in over 3 lakh hectares in the coastal districts of the state. A number of tanks and roads were damaged in Nellore , Prakasam, East Godavari, Guntur and Srikakulam districts due to heavy rains. A number of rivulets, streams and tanks in these districts were in spite while flash floods in Prakasam district disrupted road traffic. Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy reviewed the situation and directed Collectors of all the nine coastal districts to be on alert. He appointed special officers Prakasam, Nellore , East Godavari districts to monitor the relief measures. The authorities have been directed to shift people from low-lying areas to relief camps wherever necessary. These areas have recorded a rainfall of 7-10cms yesterday. Meanwhile, the depression came closer to the Andhra coast after changing its direction and lay about 150 km from Ongole by last midnight. The Indian Meteorological Department said the depression was likely to cross the coast anytime now between Ongole and Machilipatnam, causing heavy rain in these places. Strong winds would sweep along and off the coast. First warning signals have been hoisted at Krishnapatnam, Vodarevu, Nizampatnam, Machilipatnam, Kakinada and Visakhapatnam ports and fishermen were asked to suspend fishing activity.In Tamil Nadu incessant rain has disrupted normal life especially in the coastal areas. The state government has set up several relief camps in community centres in the affected areas. The government is also gearing up relief operations. The Met Department said that monsoon is usually end by December first week has further extended due to the rain in the past week. State government has decided to approach the centre for an assistance of 1,607 crore rupees. Our correspondent reports that the decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting which was held yesterday. AIR correspondent Joy reports from Chennai that the medical officer of the Chennai Corporation visited the relief camp in 35 locations all over the city to control and prevent rain related diseases. Reports from the coastal area point out that flood water stagnated in the agricultural field of the delta area has started to recede.
