Rains add to the North chill

Rain, snow and fog disrupt normal life in North India.

In Jammu and Kashmir, 300-km long Srinagar-Jammu highway has been closed for traffic following first major snowfall of the season. Nearly two-feet snow is accumulated on either side of Jaahar Tunnel resulting in closure of highway for the second consecutive day.

All the higher riches, including Gulmarg, Gurez and Pahelgam, have received heavy snowfall. An avalanche warning is issued for people living near higher riches. Srinagar and adjoining areas are also snow clayed and tourists and locals are cherishing snow scene.

AIR Srinagar correspondent reports that snowfall and rain has brightened prospects of both agriculture and tourism sector.

In National capital Delhi, overnight rain brought chill this morning but the minimum temperature remained at above normal levels. The rain gauges in the city measured a total of 7.9 mm for the past 24 hours ending 8:30 AM today.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 12.5 degree Celsius, five degrees above normal. The city experienced the coldest day temperature on Friday with maximum temperature recorded at a low of 16.9 degree Celsius.

In Uttarakhand, cold condition has intensified following the snow fall at high altitude areas and rain at different places.

In Uttar Pradesh, rain and cold wind during last 24 hours have made the weather chiller. Several trains especially on Delhi Howrah route are running late by four to 10 hours due to fog.

In Uttar Pradesh, chilly wind has brought down day’s temperature again after a brief respite of two days.

Thick fog during mornings and evenings has disrupted rail, road and air traffic. Scattered rain lashed some eastern and western districts.

Day temperature is hovering between 14 to 16 degrees Celsius. Schools up to eight standards are closed till Thursday in some western districts.

The met office has predicted scattered rain or thundershower during next twenty four hours.
