Shami and Bhuwaneshwar Kumar inflicted early blows to the visitors. They were 23 for 3 in 7th over. But stand-in skipper Ross Taylor and Luke Ronchi's 62 runs partnership for the fourth wicket saved them from further down slide. A rather aggressive Ronchi was the last man out for 35 off Ravinder Jadeja.
