In Uttar Pradesh, about 30 people were killed while several others injured in different incidents of house and wall collapse due to incessant rainfall in several districts of eastern region of the state during the past 24 hours. About 18 people have died in Jaunpur district in different incidents. AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that the state government has announced an ex-gratia payment of one lakh rupees each to the families of the deceased. According to weather office, in Varanasi division, rainfall has been recorded from 2 to 6 centimetres during last 12 hours. Similarly rain is still continuing in different districts of the region and it has wreaked havoc in eastern districts while water level was rising in major rivers poising a fresh threat of floods. River Ganga was above the danger level at Ballia, river Saryu at Ayodhya and river Ghagra at Turtipar. Over 50 villages of Chandauli district has been flooded with rain waters in the past 24 hours. Weather man has predicted heavy rain falls in several parts of Eastern UP in the next 36 hours. Meanwhile, train services on the busy Delhi- Howrah route was also remained paralysed for more than 12 hours as signaling system failed at Mughalsarai station due to heavy water logging at the railway tracks. More than 50 long distance trains were reported running delayed due to the malfunctioning of signal system. This caused passengers travelling by the trains to a face a lot of inconvenience. Heavy rains have crippled normal life in urban areas. Due to water logging at various places, road transport was also crippled. The roads also caved in at many places due to which people faced a lot of inconveniences. The state government has released two crore rupees for rain and flood hit people of eastern districts and has rushed teams of National Disaster Relief Force and PAC to the affected districts. The district magistrates of the respective districts have been asked to remain on alert.Odisha continues to reel under one of the worst floods in recent history with hundreds of villages still marooned and thosands of affected people starving for food since six days.The floods in major rivers like Baitarani, Brahmani, Budhabalanga and Subarnarekha over more than 1,100 villages in 10 districts of the 30 districts in the state. The worst hit has been Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada and Keonjhar districts.Though water level of Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga, Baitarani have come down, Brahmani continues to rise menacingly. A large number of people have taken shelter over river embankments, house roofs and trees as flood water has entered or damaged their houses with road communication being cut off in flood water.According to reports received from the Odisha government, 17 people have so far lost their lives in the second phase of flood in Odisha that affected more than 22 lakh people. 1,114 villages are still marooned in flood water, while 3,128 villages and 11 cities have been badly affected in the second phase of flood.The state government has also expressed its inability in providing relief to many marooned areas due to high level of flood water. Six helicopters which have been engaged in relief operation are not able to cover the vast flood-affected areas in the state.A 4-member Central team is visiting Odisha today o assess loss due to the current flood. The flood in Mahanadi river system in the second week of this month had affected 3.4 million people in 19 districts, causing 39 human casualty and a loss of Rs 2,122 crore to the State.
